Day 10#20 Half way ….For this greeting card image, we dash back across to South America but this time to Bolivia. Having arrived at El Alto, the airport serving La Paz, following an overnight flight from London Heathrow via Madrid and Santa Cruz we found that we had to spend the whole day in there to catch our onward flight down to Rurrenabaque. El Alto is high up in the Andes at an altitude of 4,061.5 m (13,325 ft). So while we were waiting we made our first mistake – we ate a hearty breakfast. Apparently not a good idea when you haven’t spent time building up to 13000 feet. We struggled all day with mild altitude sickness but once we boarded our little plane and descended into the jungle we were fine. The next day we travelled for 5 hours by car and canoe to a remote jungle camp on the banks of the Yacuma river. Our base for the next three nights. On one of our gentle forays down river on a small, but motored, canoe we came across flocks of Hoatzin – known locally as chicken birds. They may be dramatic looking but they are not very adept at flying. They are noisy and are constantly crashing about in the trees being as clumsy and ungainly as they look. This one though, sitting alone on a branch, managed to look quite superior, regal almost but don’t be deceived, within seconds, it too joined in the revelry of jungle chaos.
