Who’d like the opportunity to sponsor a desk !

Oct 19, 2021 | Building the Emily Collins School - Latest news

Talking to Martin in Uganda last weekend we discussed the need for desks for the children to use to do their schooling. As you can imagine, building a school is one thing, fitting it out to be of practical use is another. As you can see in the photos below the school is not quite finished by western standards, but in Uganda, needs must and once the windows and doors have been finally fitted to the latrines later this week they will look towards using the building as best they can.

The school still needs to be plastered outside and the walls inside are also still bare. The floors remain rough but that won’t deter them. Electricity and water to the School have been requested and will no doubt arrive at some stage but Martin is hoping to be able to make the most of the daylight hours until those services arrive. His immediate need is for desks and after much consideration they have decided that the double bench desks would best fit the bill.

Could you sponsor a desk?

We have one group from our church who have offered to sponsor a desk a week until Christmas, so perhaps you’d like to do something similar.

if you as an individual, a family or even a business feel drawn to sponsoring a desk then we would love to hear from you. The desks will be made in our new woodwork training centre in Rukungiri and will give much needed employment to a couple of skilful carpenters as well as give the apprentices the opportunity to learn their trade on a commercial project. It will also be advantageous to the school as it will be able to ‘buy’ at a preferential rate. It will also mean that the children at The Emily Collins School will be better able to concentrate and learn if they are comfortable and able to write at a proper desk.

…And how much might it cost?

So, how much do these bench desks cost? Well, materials and labour combined amount to the UK equivalent of £31, so we are asking you to consider sponsoring 1, or maybe even 2 as an individual, perhaps more if it is a whole family and if you are a business, then as many as you’d like to!. If you feel that you would like to donate then please feel free to go to the Gift section of the website shop (or look for the donate button, which will be coming soon!)
